Welistyou Safety Tips:
While most individuals who use Welistyou site have success with listing, buying or connecting with other users, from time to time, we do get reports of people attempting to scam or defraud our users. Welistyou has no tolerance for criminals attempting online fraud. Our internal systems and technologies keep a watch on key areas of the site and also ensure our members are educated about safe online behavior.
Listers attempting fraud:
Unfortunately commerce can attract fraudulent people, and online commerce is no different. The most common attempt of fraud may occur when a lister lists an listing they don't intend to send but accepts money for it.
We also see criminal groups trying to lure listers to trade outside Welistyou site. These fraudsters typically ask buyers to make payments using Western Union, Vigo or MoneyGram because they are untraceable.
To reduce the likelihood of lister fraud, guard yourself with the following:
- Only use safe payment methods like PAYPAL.
- Never use Western Union or other instant money transfer services.
- Be wary of fake Offers. Always check your emails in My Welistyou Summary under My Messages for genuine Welistyou Offers.
- Never trade outside the Welistyou site.
- Get to know your Lister. Check their Feedback Profile before buying an listing.
- Carefully read listing descriptions and the lister's terms.
- Remember: If an offer sounds too good to be true - it probably is.
- Don't believe a lister who says that Welistyou is holding goods at its warehouse. Welistyou is a marketplace that brings together listers and buyers. Welistyou never take possession of listings from listers or hold money from buyers.
Buyers attempting fraud:
A buyer offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check. Distant person offers to send you a money order and then have you wire money. Sometimes a buyer may attempt to persuade lister to transact outside the Welistyou site.
Even though buyer fraud is rare, to reduce the likelihood, guard yourself with the following:
- Never trade outside the Welistyou site.
- Offer PAYPAL as a payment option for buyers.
- Wait for funds to clear before sending the listing.
- Be suspicious of buyers offering you much more than the listing is worth.
- Don't be tempted to send an listing based on a buyer emailing you a receipt or "money transfer number (MTN)". This may not be genuine.
Avoiding Email Fraud or Spam:
Spam email is such a common occurrence; you may think you know what to look for. But there are two types of email scams that can be more difficult to identify, and that can be especially harmful if you fail to notice the warning signs - phishing and spoofing. Both practices concern fraudulent email where the 'from address' has been forged to make it appear as if it came from somewhere, or someone, other than the actual source.
Phishing emails are used to fraudulently obtain personal identification and account information. They can also be used to lure the recipient into downloading malicious spyware programs. The message will often suggest there are issues with the recipient's account that requires immediate attention. A link will also be provided to a spoof website where the recipient will be asked to provide personal/account information or download malicious software.
Spoof emails often include a fraudulent offer of employment and/or the invitation to serve as a go-between for money transfers. This scam is primarily directed at a general audience, but it can also reach Welistyou.com listers who have included contact information on their profile. In most cases, the sender uses a program to auto-generate an email list using random email addresses. Like with phishing emails, the sender's address is often disguised.
Fraudulent Emails:
It's not always easy to identify fraudulent (or phishing) emails, because as technology progresses scammers get more sophisticated. Getting to know some of the more common techniques can help tip you off before becoming a victim of fraud.
- A threat to accounts - emails stating (usually with a sense of urgency) that your account is in jeopardy and requires personal information to keep it from being closed or suspended.
- Lost information - emails claiming that Welistyou is upgrading its files or accounts and needs your personal details. All genuine emails regarding about your Welistyou account will also appear in My Summary under My Messages.
- Requests for personal information - emails asking you to enter personal information such as a username, password or bank account details by clicking on a link or completing a form, even if the link takes you to an official looking site.
- Sender's address - the "From" field in an email can be easily altered to disguise the real sender and make it appear as if the email is from Welistyou or another trusted company. Don't rely on this to validate the origin of the email.
- Links to sites - links that appear to connect to an official site can be forged. Always open up a new browser window and manually type in the website address.
- Offers - check your emails in My Welistyou account to ensure Offers are legitimate, genuine and ignore any request for payment through instant wire money transfers like Western Union, Vigo or MoneyGram (these forms of payment are prohibited on Welistyou).
